Oral Health Outreach at Kamanga Health Center.
In August 2023, Tanzania Health Environment and Development Initiatives (THEDI), in partnership with the Cedar Foundation Tanzania, successfully conducted a transformative oral health outreach mission at Kamanga Health Centre in Sengerema District, Mwanza.

A team of specialists provided essential dental services to the Nyamatongo Ward, a community of over 16,000 residents who previously lacked access to professional dental practitioners. This mission addressed a critical "care desert" where residents were often forced to live with untreated pain due to the total absence of Dental Therapists or Assistant Dental Officers in the immediate area.

The outreach served as both a clinical service and a vital data-gathering exercise. Through detailed screenings and assessments, the team identified a high prevalence of untreated dental caries (tooth decay) and periodontal (gum) diseases. The findings highlighted a significant link between poor oral health and socio-economic strain, noting that untreated conditions frequently led to school absenteeism for children and lost working days for adults. Beyond immediate treatment, the team provided targeted oral health education, addressing knowledge gaps regarding sugary diets and the importance of regular brushing with fluoride toothpaste.

The evidence and figures collected during these three days in Sengerema provided the essential scientific baseline used to develop the large-scale Oral Health Project for the entire Mwanza region. By documenting the high rates of decay and the lack of professional access in Kamanga, THEDI and its partners successfully advocated for a multi-district rollout. This strategic progression ensured that the lessons learned during the August 2023 outreach became the foundation for the regional planning meeting held in January 2024, aiming for long-term health equity across Mwanza.
