THEDI has successfully completed the development and deployment of an integrated digital waste management system for Mwanza City and Ilemela Municipal Councils. Contracted by Enabel Tanzania under the European Union-funded “Inclu-Cities” project, THEDI’s role focused on creating a central digital hub to promote a green and circular economy for over 1.1 million residents. This achievement transitioned the municipalities from fragmented, manual tracking to a centralized web-based portal that provides the councils with their first comprehensive, data-driven overview of urban sanitation logistics across 37 wards and 346 streets.
By utilizing GIS technology, THEDI mapped 126 waste collection points and profiled a vast network of waste practitioners 98% of whom are private waste dealers. The system enables local authorities to visualize waste composition, collection frequency, and infrastructure gaps in real-time. Beyond technical innovation, THEDI played a critical role in stakeholder formalization and capacity building. By identifying that over 60% of current collection sites were informal, THEDI provided a strategic roadmap for turning the daily generation of 1,036 tons of waste into economic opportunities, fostering green entrepreneurship and formal business growth.
To ensure the project's long-term sustainability, THEDI executed a full-scale digital transformation through intensive Training of Trainers (ToT) and end-user workshops. These sessions empowered council staff and community stakeholders to maintain the digital ecosystem and drive urban environmental improvements. This milestone marks a significant step in Mwanza’s journey toward becoming a cleaner, more inclusive city, protecting the Lake Victoria ecosystem through transparent, data-driven, and efficient public service delivery.
