SENGEREMA, MWANZA — Following its high-profile project inception meeting, the Tanzania Health Environment and Development Initiatives (THEDI) has successfully advanced its oral health promotion campaign by conducting extensive training sessions for 311 key community leaders.
The phased training took place between July 8 and July 10, 2026, equipping frontline educators and health workers with the skills needed to roll out field activities across Sengerema District. The initiative was executed in close collaboration with Bridge2Aid (B2A) and the Sengerema District Council Health Department. This milestone marks the successful completion of the project's first phase.
Dual-Track Training Framework
To ensure maximum community reach, the capacity-building program was divided into two strategic components:
School-Based Oral Health Promotion: Focused on training 181 participants, including Ward Education Coordinators, Head Teachers, and Health Teachers, representing 56 local schools.
Community-Based Oral Health Promotion: Focused on training 130 participants, comprising Health Facility In-charges, Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) Coordinators, and Community Health Workers (CHWs) from 44 villages.
Extensive Community Coverage
The comprehensive training sessions brought together key stakeholders from a wide network of local wards. Participants of the training were from 13 out of 26 wards namely; Nyatukara, Ibisabageni, Ibondo, Mwabaluhi, Mission, Tabaruka, Sima, Buzilasoga, Igulumuki, Nyampande, Kahumulo, Bitoto, and Busisi.
Looking Ahead: Early 2027 Phase II and Outreach
This completed session serves as the foundation for a larger roadmap. THEDI and its partners expect to launch the second and final phase of the training in early January 2027 for the remained 13 wards. This upcoming phase will run in parallel with the official launch of an intensive oral health outreach program targeting remote villages, bringing critical preventive care and clinical assistance to the most underserved communities in the district.
