This March 20th, the Tanzania Health Environment and Development Initiatives (THEDI) proudly join the global community in celebrating World Oral Health Day 2026. Under the official theme, “A Happy Mouth is… A Happy Life,” we are reflecting on a landmark period of clinical impact and community transformation across the Mwanza region.
The Vision: A Gateway to Lifelong Health
At THEDI, we believe a healthy mouth is the foundation for overall well-being. In alignment with the Ministry of Health (MoH), our mission is to ensure that oral health is recognized as a fundamental pillar of public health for every Tanzanian. A healthy mouth provides a child the confidence to speak in class, an adult the ability to work without pain, and an elder the dignity of a functional smile.
Impact: 100% Training Success and Massive Outreach
Sustainable healthcare requires a skilled, permanent local workforce supported by active community engagement. We are proud to announce that, since 2024, THEDI and Bridge2Aid (B2A) have conducted 4 rounds of oral health outreach for 10 days each in parallel with our professional training programs.
Through these intensive missions, we provided comprehensive screenings and specialized treatments such as fillings, root canals, and extractions to a total of over 7,000 patients. Most notably, we restored the confidence and function of over 800 clients by fitting them with removable partial dentures. The program significantly bridging the gap and increased access to specialized oral healthcare services to underserved population across 40 villages.
Central to this success is the completion of our training target: 29 Dental Therapists (DTs) from the Sengerema, Buchosa, Magu, Kwimba, Misungwi, Ilemela, and Nyamagana district councils have now been successfully trained, representing 100% of our regional goal.
Clinical Training Highlights:
The program was specifically designed to align with the Ministry of Health’s five priority areas, equipping these 29 DTs with advanced clinical expertise in:
• Root canal treatments on single-rooted teeth.
• Fabrication of removable partial dentures to restore function.
• Interpretation of dental X-rays for accurate diagnosis.
• Restorative treatments on molars and composite fillings on anterior teeth and incision and drainage of small dental abscesses.
• Pediatric behavior management for compassionate child care.
The Action: 100% Coverage in Misungwi District
The highlight of our 2026 celebration is a historic achievement in community outreach: THEDI and Bridge2Aid have officially reached 100% coverage of villages and primary schools across the Misungwi District. Through systematic promotion and screenings, we have ensured that no school children or family member in the district is left behind, moving Misungwi toward a future of proactive prevention.
Take the Pledge for Your Smile:
As we celebrate these achievements, THEDI encourages all Tanzanians to follow three simple steps for a "Happy Mouth":
• Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste.
• Visit a Dentist or Dental Therapist at least every six months for a check-up.
• Limit sugary snacks to protect your teeth from decay.
A Future of Smiles:
As we look beyond World Oral Health Day 2026, THEDI remains dedicated to working alongside the Ministry of Health to replicate the "Misungwi Model" across other districts. A happy mouth truly is a happy life, and together, we are building a healthier future for all.
