Digitalizing Waste Management for a Greener Mwanza:

Story Overview

THEDI is proud to announce the successful completion of a transformative digital waste management project in Mwanza City and Ilemela Municipal Councils. In partnership with Enabel Tanzania and the European Union, we spearheaded the "Inclu-Cities" initiative to revolutionize urban sanitation for over 1.1 million residents. By replacing outdated manual processes with a cutting-edge GIS-integrated web portal, THEDI has empowered local authorities to track waste generation trends, optimize collection routes, and transition toward a sustainable circular economy. Our team mapped 126 collection points across 346 streets, providing the data-driven foundation needed to manage the 1,036 tons of waste generated daily in the region.

Beyond the technology, this project was about economic empowerment and environmental resilience. THEDI identified and profiled a vast network of private waste practitioners 98% of whom are individual dealers creating a digital ecosystem that connects waste generators with recyclers. To ensure the system's longevity, we conducted intensive Training of Trainers (ToT) and end-user workshops, building local capacity to maintain these digital tools. By formalizing the waste-to-wealth chain, THEDI is not just cleaning up streets; we are fostering green entrepreneurship and protecting the vital ecosystem of Lake Victoria, proving that smart technology is the key to building cleaner, more inclusive cities.
