Story Overview
In the rural landscapes of the Misungwi District, a quiet revolution is taking place one tooth, one school, and one clinic at a time. What began as a mission to provide emergency dental relief has evolved into a comprehensive, award-winning model for sustainable oral healthcare in Tanzania. Through a strategic partnership between THEDI and Bridge2Aid (B2A), the Misungwi Oral Health Pilot (2024–2026) is proving that specialized oral healthcare isn’t just for the city it’s a fundamental right for every villager.
Breaking the Cycle of Pain:
For years, residents in remote villages like Nhundulu and Isesa had little choice when faced with dental pain: endure it or travel hours for an extraction. Today, that narrative has changed. Through four intensive outreach rounds across eight rural health facilities, THEDI has reached over 7,000 patients. The impact is visible in the smiles of 800 people who received removable partial dentures, restoring not just their ability to eat, but their confidence to speak and laugh. By introducing advanced procedures like root canals and composite fillings to rural areas, THEDI is moving the community from "emergency extractions" to "restorative care."
Empowering the Frontline:
The true heart of this success lies in capacity building. THEDI successfully trained and mentored all 29 Dental Therapists (100%) in the Mwanza region. Using a hybrid model of in-person mentorship and remote support, these practitioners are now experts in five priority areas defined by the Ministry of Health, including the root canal treatments on single-rooted teeth, fabrication of removable partial dentures, interpretation of dental x-rays, restorative treatments on molars, incision and drainage of small dental abscesses, and composite fillings on anterior teeth and pediatric behavior management. "We aren't just giving treatments; we are leaving behind a skilled workforce," says the THEDI project team. This local expertise ensures that high-quality care continues long after the outreach teams depart.

A Sustainable Blueprint for Mwanza:
Sustainability is not a buzzword for THEDI it’s a budget line. Through persistent advocacy, THEDI influenced district authorities to integrate oral health into their official budgets. This led to a dramatic expansion of infrastructure:
Doubled Access: Operational dental clinics grew from four to seven, with the final facility currently in development. THEDI facilitated renovations and installation of complete dental chairs at Mbarika, Nhundulu, and Kolomije, achieving near-total district coverage.
Inter-generational Impact: Schools and Community based oral health promotion
To ensure the next generation grows up with "Happy Mouths," THEDI activated a grassroots network. We empowered 120 primary schools by training every headteacher and health teacher in the district. Simultaneously, 230 Community Health Workers (CHWs) representing all 115 villages were equipped to lead oral health promotion at the doorstep.
The Road Ahead Scaling up the Vision:
The Misungwi Pilot is more than a local success; it is a scalable evidence-based model. As we look toward 2026, THEDI is preparing to replicate this "Comprehensive Approach" across Sengerema, Ukerewe, Magu, Buchosa, Kwimba and beyond Mwanza region.
By bridging the gap between supply-side clinical excellence and demand-side community education, THEDI is building a future where oral health is accessible, affordable, and integrated into the fabric of Tanzanian life.
