THEDI is out to partner with communities, and stakeholders to protect, promote, and improve people’s health and well-being to achieve sustainable community development.
Our goal is to have IMPACT IN LIVES by protecting, promoting, and improving the well-being of the people with a focus to promote sustainable community development in Tanzania.
Tanzania Health Environment and Development Initiatives (THEDI) was founded in October 2022 by a group of energetic specialists in public health, environment, finance and administration, monitoring and evaluation, and information technology. They came together with the mission to partner with communities, and stakeholders to protect, promote, and improve people’s health and well-being. They also realized the necessity of this establishment as a driving force in contributing to sustainable community development in Tanzania. THEDI like other Non-Governmental Organizations and international humanitarian institutions, aims at achieving sustainable results from developmental where health promotion is seen as a core driving force. The multisectoral approach will lead to the success of the organization and the focus will be on strengthening the participation and involvement of communities and different stakeholders for impactful .
Tanzania Health Environment and Development Initiatives (THEDI) is a local NGO established under the Non-Governmental Organization Act, 2002 with registration No. 00NGO/R/4153. THEDI is legally operating in accordance with its governing constitution and the law of the United Republic of Tanzania. For the bolded impact of its mission, THEDI shall jointly work in partnership with the Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender, Women, and Special Groups, and Regional Administration and Local Government (PORALG).
THEDI and Cedar Foundation conducted an oral outreach mission at Kamanga health center in Sengerema district in July 2023. Public awareness was raised through community health workers, community leaders, and religion leaders. The mission involved screening and treating individuals with oral health conditions as well as assessing oral health knowledge, attitude, and practice. The mission helped the organization to understand the extent of oral health issues, the availability and accessibility of quality healthcare services, and the level of basic oral health knowledge and practice among communities.
THEDI team organized and conducted a micro planning session with Mwanza City Council Environment Department in May 2023. The purpose of the meeting was to orient the Mwanza City Team on the electronic tools which could enhance conducting supervision of solid waste management. The session enabled the team to review the various tools, plans, and strategies for stakeholders’ engagement during the entire planning, implementation, and evaluation process of the proposed initiative.
THEDI in collaboration with Mwanza City Council joined hands to clean up recreational areas and public transport stops during World Cleanup Day in 2023. Volunteers worked in teams from 8 am to noon, receiving a free event t-shirt, clean-up supplies, and a "Thank You" from Mwanza City Council Authority. THEDI advised the City Council to conduct a public awareness campaign for the entire commemoration week to increase community involvement.
In January 2024, THEDI and B2A conducted a joint strategic planning meeting at Tilapia Hotel Mwanza. The meeting was for 2 days with the aim of orienting the teams from both organizations on the proposed ORAL HEALTH PROJECT “Improving Access to Oral Healthcare Education and Promotion among Underserved Population in Six Districts Mwanza - Tanzania: “A Comprehensive Approach.” The meeting was very successful and enabled both organizations to align the project documents including the project proposal, project action plans, project M&E matrix, and proposed project milestones. The meeting provided the green light for the kick-off of the project to Misungwi pilot district.
In January 2024, THEDI organized an advocacy and sensitization meeting with Misungwi district Council. This was a follow-on meeting after the fore advocacy meetings conducted at National and Regional levels. The main purpose of all meetings was to mark the introduction of the project “Improving Access to Oral Healthcare Education and Promotion among Underserved Population in Six Districts Mwanza - Tanzania: “A Comprehensive Approach” and win support throughout project planning, implementation, and evaluation. The reception of the project was very impressive at all levels. In Misungwi, the meeting was chaired by the District Executive Director (DED), and during his opening remarks, he appreciated THEDI for the initiatives and emphasized joint planning and implementation. DED guarantees full support throughout the project duration. THEDI team used the meeting platform to highlight the goal and objectives of the project and the expected outcomes.
In February 2024, THEDI conducted a logistic assessment in Misungwi district to gather information for effective project planning and implementation. The team included health education and community-based coordinators from Misungwi district council. The team conducted a desk review and compiled all potential information that will inform the micro planning session. The team also conducted a two-day field visit to assess the feasibility of rural health facilities for oral health outreach programs. This allowed the team to identify suitable outreach centers and training venues for the project.
